The modern fashion industry has gradually broken down cultural barriers, directly conveying social messages rather than just reflecting them like in the past.
Taleedah Tamer is the daughter of former model Cristina Tamer, who has worked with legends such as Giorgio Armani, La Perla, Gianfranco Ferré and pharmaceutical beauty mogul, Ayman Tamer.
With both Arabic and Italian descent, Tamer’s biggest difficulty is cultural differences.
Special marks on the Paris high fashion stage have brought career prospects to the young model.
What cultural obstacles did Taleedah Tamer encounter on her path to becoming a model?
I consider cultural understanding and awareness to be very important.
What are your thoughts on the presence of Arab women in the international fashion industry?
Arab women can shine in many different fields and careers, not just the fashion industry.
Tamer believes that Arab women need to be recognized for their talent and given the opportunity to express it.
In your opinion, what are some common limitations of Arab women and the Arab fashion industry?
One of the biggest limitations about the Arab fashion industry is that women love to express their own identity in choosing outfits for performances.
Who are the designers you dream of collaborating with?
There are many talented designers that I want to work with because I feel like I can learn from them about free, different and unique thinking.
Tamer hopes to collaborate with designers who worked with her mother such as Giorgio Armani, Donatella Versace, Alexander McQueen, Karl Lagerfeld.
Can you share a little about your experience at the Paris haute couture show?
I had a wonderful experience with designer Antonio Grimaldi, my teacher and best friend.
The fashion industry is expanding its feminist manifesto and especially with the recent repeal of the law banning Arab women from driving, what are your thoughts on this?
Growing up in the city of Jeddah, I clearly understand the anticipation and happiness of Arab women when this meaningful event takes place.
Tamer hopes that the Arab fashion industry in general and Arab models in particular will have new steps forward in the future.
Being half Italian, what do you feel this means in life?
Being half Italian from my mother, I was raised in a multicultural family.
In your opinion, what issues are most prominent in the fashion community today (politics, race, model size, cultural appropriation…)?
I care about many social issues, however, I think fashion diversity is an important aspect that needs to be talked about more often.
Instead of following common standards of beauty, Temar believes that it is diversity and breakthroughs in the fashion industry that deserve more attention.
